Senegal / Dakar / Casamance

SENEGAL – December 2011

The third trip in less than two years. This time with the organization Sol y Luna, destination Senegal.
We had a new mission: to bring school supplies, clothes and shoes to children in remote villages in the deep poor region of Cassamance.

We shipped the 4 cars from the port of Las Palmas, Gran Canary, (including my Fiat Panda 4×4). The cars arrived after a journey of 10 days in Dakar, the capital. Our group of 11 volunteers landed in Dakartwo days before the arrival of the cars.
There was tension in the Dakar harbour resulting in a 7-day Customs block. Only after a “game” of official documents to the limit of the law we were able to move.

We planned everything, the details of the movements, logistic bases, but we did not count with the terrorist problem. The main road was blocked by the military just before Cassamance region and this did not allow us to follow the original program.
With the help of some locals we found an alternative route through ravines and finally we reached the Village of Sara Samba which was our main destination and we were able to deliver our humanitarian aids.
The gallery of pictures will show the joy of the children we met and these are more explicit than words.. Happiness expressed with smiles and gestures of affection that we will never forget.
