It’s image was too European and therefore I turned it into a mechanical zebra. A success! She was noticed by all and tore a smile from anyone who met her. I made a restyling of the seats as well. Before it passed into the able hands of Lalo for a complete overhaul before the trip, the car was in a very bad need of substantial maintenance. The help came from my friend Celio of ‘Desguaces Tenerife’. He found a Fiat Panda of 1995 in his junkyard. The amazing thing was that this “junk” was newer than my car! We replaced almost everything: change, distribution, shock absorbers, engine parts, mechanical and various other parts of the body. Within a couple of weeks my Panda, or rather, my ‘Zebra’ as everyone called her, was ready for the African desert.
Fiat PANDA 4×4 (1988)
For Africa I chose an old Fiat Panda 4×4, year 1988: strictly appropriate to the terrain of the black continent. A Fiat Panda 4×4 with reinforced sides and a front to fight against ditches and slopes.
